Getting started

5 tips to kickstart your fundraising

The first few days are the most important. Set up your page, make your first donation yourself, and share it immediately with your closest contacts to build early momentum.

Read the 5 tips โ†“
  1. Set up your Localgiving page before you tell anyone โ€” having a live page ready makes it easy for people to give immediately.
  2. Make the first donation yourself, even a small one. Pages with at least one donation get far more contributions.
  3. Write a heartfelt personal message about why you're supporting Floating Counselling Community.
  4. Send a personal WhatsApp or text to your 10 closest contacts on day one โ€” direct asks outperform public posts.
  5. Post on social media with a photo of you preparing for your challenge to build excitement early.

Online

10 tips for fundraising online

Your Localgiving page is your online fundraising hub. Make it work harder with these tips for driving traffic, building trust and converting visitors into donors.

Read the 10 tips โ†“
  1. Add a photo to your fundraising page โ€” pages with photos raise significantly more than those without.
  2. Write a compelling story that explains what Floating Counselling Community does and why it matters to you personally.
  3. Set a clear fundraising target โ€” a goal gives donors a reason to push you over the line.
  4. Share your page link in your email signature for the duration of your fundraising.
  5. Ask 3 friends to share your page on their own social channels โ€” their networks are new potential donors.
  6. Post a fundraising update every week, even if it's just a short progress note โ€” activity keeps your page visible.
  7. Remind donors to tick the Gift Aid box on Localgiving โ€” it adds 25% to every eligible donation at no cost to them.
  8. Thank every donor publicly on your page โ€” it shows appreciation and encourages others to give.
  9. Share milestones: "halfway there!", "just ยฃ50 to go!" โ€” momentum posts inspire last-minute donations.
  10. After the event, post a thank you update with your final total to celebrate your achievement and inspire future fundraisers.

Social media

10 tips for fundraising on social media

Social media can transform your fundraising. These tips help you use Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and TikTok to reach more people and inspire more donations.

  2. Use Instagram Stories and WhatsApp Status to give quick daily updates without overwhelming your feed.
  3. Always include your Localgiving page link in your bio and every post caption.
  4. Tag Floating Counselling Community in your posts so we can reshare and amplify your reach.
  5. Use relevant hashtags such as #CommunityFundraising #Croydon #SouthLondon #MentalHealthMatters.
  6. Post a "why I'm doing this" video โ€” authentic, personal video content gets far more engagement than text.
  7. Share photos of the community your fundraising supports โ€” with permission โ€” to show donors real impact.
  8. Create a countdown post in the final days of your campaign to create urgency.
  9. Ask friends and family to comment and share your posts โ€” social proof encourages new donors.
  10. Go live on Instagram or Facebook during your challenge โ€” live content builds real-time momentum and donations.

Boost

5 tips to boost your fundraising

Donations slowing down mid-campaign? These ideas will give your fundraising a fresh burst of energy and help you power through to your target.

Read the 5 tips โ†“
  1. Raise your target โ€” counterintuitively, increasing your goal signals confidence and often unlocks extra donations.
  2. Ask a friend or colleague to match-fund donations for 24 hours to create a giving spike.
  3. Reach out to local businesses for a donation or prize โ€” even a small contribution builds momentum.
  4. Send a personal follow-up message to contacts who saw your post but haven't donated yet.
  5. Share a specific impact message โ€” e.g. "Just ยฃ20 funds a week of food parcels for an elderly resident" โ€” to make giving feel tangible.

Event day

5 tips for event day fundraising

The days just before and after your event are your biggest fundraising opportunities. Make the most of the excitement and emotion around the big day.

Read the 5 tips โ†“
  1. Send a final reminder to all contacts the day before your event โ€” many people mean to donate but forget.
  2. Post a photo or video at the start of your event to build real-time excitement and last-minute donations.
  3. Go live on social media during the event if possible โ€” even 60 seconds of live footage drives engagement.

  5. Within 48 hours, send personal thank you messages to every donor โ€” this builds lasting supporter relationships.

How do I set up a fundraising page for Floating Counselling Community? +

Head to our Localgiving page at localgiving.org/charity/floatingcounselling and click "Fundraise for us". You'll be guided through creating your own personal fundraising page in just a few minutes. You'll need to create a free Localgiving account if you don't already have one.

Can I claim Gift Aid on donations? +

Yes! Donations made through our Localgiving page are eligible for Gift Aid. Localgiving Foundation is a registered charity and processes Gift Aid on our behalf โ€” meaning every ยฃ1 donated by a UK taxpayer becomes ยฃ1.25 at no extra cost to the donor. Just make sure donors tick the Gift Aid box when donating.

How do I pay in cash donations collected offline? +

If you've collected cash at an event, please contact us at info@floatingcounselling.co.uk and we'll arrange a bank transfer or cheque payment. Please keep a record of all cash collected and provide a summary when you pay in.

Do I need to sign a fundraising agreement? +

For straightforward online fundraising via Localgiving, no formal agreement is needed. However, if you're organising a larger event, collecting cash donations, or using our name and branding in printed materials, we ask that you complete our Third-Party Fundraising Agreement first. Email us and we'll send you a copy.

Can I choose which cause my fundraising supports? +

Yes โ€” you can dedicate your fundraising to our Food Bank, Community Hub, or Counselling Services. Simply mention your chosen cause in your fundraising page description, or contact us so we can ensure your funds are directed accordingly.

Will Floating Counselling Community promote my fundraising? +

We love shouting about our amazing fundraisers! Let us know about your campaign and we'll do our best to share it on our social media channels. Tag us in your posts and we'll reshare. The more visibility your campaign gets, the more you'll raise.
